Machine Startup
What to verify before starting, and a general startup sequence.
Before Starting the Machine
Check machine condition, film path, product area, safety conditions and required utilities before startup. Confirm that guards are closed and latched, the area around the infeed and discharge is clear, and the air and power supplies required by your machine are available and within the ranges stated in your machine documentation.
Starting the Machine
In general terms: apply utilities in the order defined in your machine manual, load the recipe that matches the product and film on the machine, wait for start conditions to be met, then start at reduced speed and inspect the first packages before releasing the line to production speed. Follow the exact sequence and screen names given in the documentation delivered with your specific machine.
Procedures and interface names vary by machine model and configuration. Your machine manual is the authoritative source for the startup sequence of your specific machine.
Film Loading
Loading a reel so tracking starts centered and tension starts stable.
Prepare the Film
Confirm the film matches the loaded recipe — structure, width and core — and that the reel is undamaged and correctly oriented for the film path of your machine.
Load the Film Roll
Seat the reel square on the shaft, center it against the machine's reference position, and lock the core clamp so the reel cannot shift during acceleration and deceleration.
Thread the Film Path
Follow the film path diagram on your machine or in the manual: every roller and guide in contact with the web, in the correct order, with the web centered on each element.
Check Film Tracking
Run at low speed and confirm the web stays centered before increasing speed. Record the verified reel position so the next roll change starts from a known-good setup.
Product Setup
Position, spacing and feeding checks before production.
Product Position
Set guides and fixtures so each product arrives at the forming area in the same orientation. Products that enter rotated or skewed produce skewed packages even when film and sealing are correct.
Product Spacing
Confirm the pitch between products matches the recipe values for the format, and that spacing stays even at production speed.
Feeding Check
Observe several cycles at reduced speed: product transfer should be smooth, without tipping, catching or bunching at the transition into the wrapping area.
Recipe Management
Stored parameter sets per product and film — not ad-hoc edits.
Create a Recipe
Set up the machine for the product, verify the result on sample packages, then store the verified values as a named recipe for that product and film combination.
Load an Existing Recipe
Before every run start, load the stored recipe that matches the current production order — do not rebuild parameters from memory.
Check Recipe Parameters
Compare the loaded values against the production order: product format, film, lengths and speeds. A quick verification at start-up prevents most first-shift quality faults.
Recipe screens differ by machine model and HMI generation. Refer to the operation manual delivered with your machine for the exact menu structure — screen layouts are intentionally not reproduced here.
Format Changeover
One recorded sequence: mechanics, recipe, re-phasing, test package.
Prepare for Changeover
Stop the machine per the shutdown procedure, and collect the changeover record for the target product: guide positions, format settings and the matching recipe.
Change Product Format
Set the mechanical format elements to the recorded positions for the target product, and load the product's verified recipe as the baseline for motion values.
Check Film and Sealing
If the film or width changes with the format, reload the reel per the film loading procedure, and re-verify sealing conditions for the new film before running.
Run a Test Package
Run at reduced speed and inspect sample packages — seal, cut, tracking and position — before releasing the line to production speed.
Machine Shutdown
A general safe shutdown overview.
In general terms: finish the current cycle and bring the machine to a controlled stop, return movable axes to their defined park or home position where your machine manual specifies one, then isolate energy sources according to your site's lockout procedure and the machine manual. Leave the machine clean and any fault conditions recorded in the shift log so the next shift starts from a known state.
Always follow the lockout and isolation procedure in your machine manual before cleaning, tooling changes or maintenance. Safety devices must never be bypassed.
